Hazrat Ali, the Lion of God, suggested that the man seek forgiveness from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). With the man in tow, Hazrat Ali presented him before the Prophet's presence.
When Hazrat Ali and the man stood before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), tears were streaming down their faces. The Prophet asked, "O Ali, why are you both weeping?"
Hazrat Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, replied, "O Messenger of Allah, I was on my way to you when I saw this man crying incessantly."
Curious, the Prophet inquired about the reason for the man's tears. The man responded, "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed a terrible sin, and I fear Allah's wrath. I am unsure of what to do."
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) then asked, "Have you sought forgiveness for your sin?" The man replied, "O Messenger of Allah, my sin is so great that Allah's mercy seems distant."
The Prophet continued, "Have you committed the sin of associating partners with Allah (shirk)?" The man said, "No, O Messenger of Allah, I have not committed shirk."
The Prophet asked further, "Have you taken a life unjustly?" The man replied, "O Messenger of Allah, I have never taken anyone's life."
The Prophet persisted, "Then what grave sin have you committed that has caused you so much grief and tears?"
The man began to narrate his story. He confessed to a life of theft, stealing burial shrouds from the deceased and selling them for his livelihood. He mentioned that a few days ago, he had stolen the shroud of a young girl who had been buried, and in the process, he committed a grave sin by engaging in adultery with her lifeless body. As he recounted this horrific act, he mentioned hearing the girl's voice as if she were speaking.
Upon hearing the man's confession, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was deeply moved, and tears welled up in his eyes. He declared, "Indeed, you have committed a great sin."
Overwhelmed by remorse, the man thought that the Prophet might be displeased with him. He feared that the Prophet's words might bring about further calamity. Therefore, he left the presence of the Prophet and retreated into the wilderness.
There, the man spent days in deep repentance, praying fervently to Allah and seeking forgiveness for his sins. He could still hear the voice of the girl he had wronged, and he felt the weight of his actions.
Eventually, by the divine decree of Allah, the angel Gabriel (peace be upon him) appeared before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Gabriel conveyed Allah's message, saying, "Allah has accepted the repentance of that young man. He has forgiven all his sins."
The Prophet then sent one of his companions to find the man and deliver the glad tidings that Allah had accepted his repentance and forgiven all his sins. The man's tears of remorse turned into tears of gratitude and relief as he experienced the boundless mercy of Allah.
This story serves as a reminder of the profound mercy and forgiveness of Allah and the importance of sincere repentance. It also highlights the compassionate nature of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the role of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in guiding the repentant sinner toward seeking forgiveness.
